Circa: 1950

In 1960 Warren Milks the owner of a Louisiana based sign company invented an attention grabbing device called the roto-sphere.  The spherical shape and protruding antennae of the roto-sphere created a space-like feel that resonated with the general public who were absorbed in the current space race, therefore influencing the new nickname “Sputnik”.  This particular Sputnik is one of a mass produced series of fiberglass units featuring over x flashing light bulbs on it’s x’ diameter spiked body. Formerly of the Belaire Motel, Springfield, Il on Route 66 this Sputnik was rescued prior to the demolition of the Hotel in 2015, where it was then proudly restored and installed at the Ace Sign Co. Sign Museum.
