The Cozy Dog's story began in the 1940s when Springfield native Ed Waldmire Jr. discovered a battered hot dog in Oklahoma. While serving at the Army Air Corps during World War II, he teamed up with college friend Don Strand, who perfected a batter that clung to a hot dog for deep frying. The result was an instant hit with fellow servicemen.
After the war, Ed brought the snack home to Illinois. His wife, Virginia christened it the Cozy Dog. She also drew the now-iconic logo: two smiling hot dogs leaning into each other in a friendly embrace, perfectly matching the name's charm.
The Cozy Dog debuted on June 16, 1946, at Lake Springfield Beach House, then captured hearts at the Illinois State Fair. That simple idea—and Virginia's playful logo—became the foundation of a Route 66 classic still hugging travelers' appetites today.
