Replicating history requires more than just a paintbrush; it requires a deep dive into the archives to get every detail exactly right. Our team worked tirelessly to perfectly recreate the vintage look that greeted customers over 80 years ago. The newly installed, overhead storefront sign proudly displays the original 1940s messaging: "Dairy Queen — The New Frozen Dairy Product."
Paired with glowing, historically accurate window neon replicas, the storefront vestibule (often referred to as the "fishbowl") has been entirely transported back in time. A Must-See Stop on the Mother Road.
While you won't be able to order a dipped cone or a Blizzard at this location today, the site functions as a beautifully restored historical exhibit. Visitors from around the globe cruising Route 66 will be able to stop by, peek into the restored black-and-white tiled interior, read historical storyboards about the brand's origins, and snap a picture under the glow of our neon signs. It’s a perfect tribute to a brand that now boasts nearly 8,000 locations worldwide, proving that global empires often start from humble beginnings.
We are incredibly grateful to the Joliet Area Historical Museum for trusting us with this historical gem. If you find yourself cruising down Historic Route 66 in Joliet, be sure to pull over at 501 N. Chicago Street. Take a selfie, take in the neon glow, and celebrate the sweet taste of American history!
