Route 66 Experience | Illinois State Fair

Project Scope : Route 66 is the most famous road in the world. The historical attractions, restaurants, museums, niche roadside stops, and the overall nostalgia of the road have been a part of making memories since the road was established in 1926. Its iconic status is enhanced by the unprecedented volume of music, books, films, and other art forms that depict it as the essence of America’s highway culture. The Illinois portion of The Mother Road is no exception. Through the preservation efforts and upcoming centennial celebration, we have been inspired to share the Mother Road experience with future generations. The Illinois State Fairgrounds Route 66 Experience will be a walking tour that will begin at the southernmost part of the route, at the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge in Madison, Illinois, and travel North through over 90 communities along The Mother Road, until we reach the heart of Chicago where the REAL road begins.

Over the next year, we plan to bring Illinois Route 66 to the only Fairgrounds along The Mother Road. We will use this space located inside Gate 2 to provide a version of Illinois Route 66 that will bring the feeling of the road in its prime, the excitement of the journey, and the surprises while learning about the notable small towns and communities along the way, lined with neons, giants, roadside attractions and a plethora of factoids and tidbits. Join us, and celebrate the past by living adventurously in the present—the Illinois State Fairgrounds Route 66 Experience will represent the best of our diverse American culture and allow you to experience everything our excellent road and the community that preserves it has to offer!
